    Buttoned-up

'We loved the cool, pared-down style of a house belonging to a Swedish art collector, which we had seen in a magazine,' say the owners of this west-London terrace home. Enter Hugh Leslie whose unmistakable style gradually evolved the house into a smart family home. At the front of the house on the first floor is the pretty, generously proportioned main bedroom. Hugh had their existing headboard recovered by Ridge Interior Furnishings, in a Prelle fabric, 'Jaspe' in the 'Froment' colourway bought from Alton Brooke.https://www.houseandgarden.co.uk/interiors/bathroom/en-suite-vintage-shower

    Timely ticking

This bedroom interior styled by Gabby Deeming and Ruth Sleightholme was inspired by old document print fabrics in rich, floral motifs.

The walls are covered in 'Toile Rivière Enchantée' (corail), by Charles Burger, linen/cotton, £106 a metre, from Turnell & Gigon and the bed curtain is made from 'Rayures Nantes' (blue), by Clarence House, linen/cotton, £276.80 a metre, from Turnell & Gigon, lined in 'Lining Stripe' (black), cotton, £19.50 a metre, at Ian Mankin.

The 'Livia' headboard from Ensemblier London is covered in a soft striped hemp fabric, mirroring the ticking lines, 'Nightingale Stripe' (ice blue) by Le Gracieux, £298 a metre, from Tissus d'Hélène.

    Dreamy blues

There can be few House & Garden readers who are unfamiliar with the cult names and sought-after colours of the Farrow & Ball paint chart. Friends and business partners Martin Ephson and Tom Helme, the men responsible for planting it firmly in the nation's consciousness, sold the company in 2006, and have since launched textiles company Fermoie. House & Garden decoration editor Gabby Deeming created a pretty scheme using their soft tonal fabrics. The padded headboard, upholstered in the 'Rabanna' cotton is from Fafio, while the Howe sofa has a seat cushion covered in 'Hertford Stripe'.

    Ikat inspiration

Jane Churchill planned her drawing room around a vintage silk ikat fabric she found in Istanbul. She worked the small original length into panels for the two curved-back chairs which stand by the window and the rest of the room echoes their palette of blues and greys with soft splashes of yellow.

  • A splash of pattern

For her own home Soane's Lulu Lytle upholstered her 'Bunny' sofa in a vintage Suzani throw. This bold use of pattern works perfectly with the vibrant pink of her living room walls and her eclectic display of art, proving there is no need to be overly precious about pattern-matching or finding a traditional upholstery weight fabric.

    Top-to-tail pattern

Don't be afraid of going matchy-matchy. Robert Moore used 'Palma Large' fabric from Bernard Thorp for his headboard, the curtains and also an armchair in the main bedroom of his South London home and the effect is delightful!

Sweet dreams are made of this

Kit Kemp is know for her flamboyant use of fabric. In her own home she has used Vanderhurd fabric for the towering headboard. If you are looking to commission your own headboard look to Southdown Interiors in West Sussex. They have over 20 years experience creating bespoke upholstered furniture as well as restoring antique pieces.

    Turn heads

Bunny Turner even gets interiors inspiration from rom-coms - the design of this headboard was inspired by one seen in the film The Holiday. If you are looking for a smart red wool for upholstery look no further than Hainsworth, their broadcloth is perfect for a headboard as it is 220cm wide.

    Cosy cotton

Nicky Haslam chose 'Jaislamer', an off-white cotton by John Stephanidis to cover the sofas in the sitting room of the 1740s hunting lodge on the Dogmersfield Park Estate which he rents from The National Trust.

This hard-wearing neutral cotton would work well in any scheme but here it picks up the cosy glow of the distempered walls. The sofas are softly padded with down for the ultimate in comfort.

    True Blue

Max Rollitt comissioned this one-off copy of an antique Howard design sofa for his clients' farmhouse in Hampshire. It is upholstered in Sanderson's "Picotage" cotton, in a fresh blue which contrasts with the earthy reds of the antique Farahan carpet below.
